The Imitation of Christ was written by a fifteenth-century monk who trained novices in spiritual life. Yet it reads like it’s written for us today.
That's why Christians have never stopped reading it. Across every generation and every walk of life, it calls readers beyond admiring Christ and towards imitating Him. Interior life is where that imitation takes root.

The Imitation of Christ is built around short chapters which work as meditations, examinations of conscience, and prayers.
Each passage is meant to be reflected on, so it’s not a book you race through. It’s a companion for a lifetime, one you return to again and again.

The author of The Imitation of Christ
Born around 1380 in Kempen, Germany, Thomas à Kempis spent nearly his entire life within the walls of the Augustinian monastery of Mount Saint Agnes, in the Netherlands. A Canon Regular of Saint Augustine, he devoted his days to prayer, copying of manuscripts, and the spiritual formation of novices.
He produced around 40 devotional works, though none came close to the reach of The Imitation of Christ, which he likely composed in the early fifteenth century. He died at Mount Saint Agnes in 1471, having never left the monastery for anything other than a brief exile.
